Why Do Dogs Have Black Lips?

Nathan is an extremely inquisitive, extremely wittty, and EXTREMELY TALKATIVE boy. Those of you who spend any amount of time with him will agree with me, right? Yesterday he asked me, "Why do dogs have black lips?" Hmmmmm. I have no idea. Do you have an answer for my boy??

Yes, I vouch for it - his mouth is never shut! Leave it to Nathan to come up with that question! I think I read once that humans have pink lips and dogs have black so you can tell them apart. See if he'll buy that one!!!

Okay here is the explanation that I found when I googled that question...

Dog's lips, like their noses, are black due to pigmentation. The black pigment helps them to resist sunburns. Dogs with pink noses and lips (and even skin, for the thin-haired breeds) will burn in the sun just like people.

pigmentation...but not all have black---but it is said that whatever lip color in dogs will be their nose color as well===has to do with the breed and the lighter the color the closer the breed is to being an albino of their breed...signed an advocate for those great kids like Nate that have a wonderful curiosity about them in life--keep up the questions, Nate love, b.
